ALBUMS

I’m delighted to release FULL CIRCLE — my fourth jazz album of original compositions. The album’s title reflects the journey of my first jazz composition Vancouver in 1977, through its recording as a bossa in 2018, now returning as an energetic swing tune in 2025.

While I usually have clear origin stories for my tunes, Circle Back seems to have just appeared in my consciousness as a welcomed surprise.

Two tunes express the joy of living with Cocoa, a loving black female cat with smart green eyes. Cocoa Girl (vocals) tells the story of how we found and embraced one another. Top of the Stairs—Cocoa Calls (vocals) is a ballad about how she peaks down the stairs, encouraging us to come to bed.

The harmonic line for Shadows was created about three years ago. One starry night sitting on my patio, I felt the urge to revisit and complete this tune. It’s offered as a mysterious tango called Shadows and Stars.

Just as dusk becomes nightfall, our eyes can fool us into seeing something that is not there. Edge of Darkness captures this moment. The trio version was recorded in 2022 and has been performed by many groups. Now it’s re-envisioned in quartet with sax.

Conceived and written during the covid pandemic, In Relief first appeared as a three-part series: ballad, bossa, and swing. It has been revamped as a single swing tune in a new key.

Sally Rehorick, my wife, is an international and world level figure skating judge. Throughout my compositional journey over four albums, she has often remarked about one of my emerging tunes: “that’s skate-able”, wanting to forward it to figure skaters and coaches. When she recently uttered this phrase after hearing a demo of a new tune, I was delighted to tell her that it’s called Just for Sally.

LIVE at the SILK PURSE

2022

This album was recorded live in performance at the Silk Purse Art Centre in West Vancouver, British Columbia on July 16, 2022. The unique and intimate atmosphere of the Silk Purse along with the splendid ocean view brought musicians and audience into a special connection. On this album, I speak about the origin and inspiration of all twelve tunes, thus taking listeners on a narrative compositional journey.

In 2020, I invited Roland Bourgeois, a flugelhorn player located in Dieppe, New
Brunswick, to contribute to my signature tune “Just One Moment”. This rekindled our jazz performance connection from the 1980s. As the Covid pandemic continued to unfold, Roland, Miles Black, and I meet on ZOOM every few weeks, resulting in the release of a digital album of our original compositions. We feature Roland on flugelhorn.

CANADIAN HORIZONS

(digital album only)

2021

Between 2018 and 2020, I began compositional explorations that expanded my music to include instrumental,  more vocal, and spoken word jazz tunes. The plan was to record the album live in performance. When Covid struck, that was dashed.

Miles Black and I conferred and decided to record, looking toward live performance at a future date. We returned to Monarch Studios Studios on September 28, 2020. The album was in my hands just before Christmas.
